Karachi to Get 50 More Double-Decker Buses, EV Taxi Service to Launch in September

The Sindh government has announced a major expansion of Karachi’s public transport system, confirming that 50 more double-decker buses will arrive in October 2026 while an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service will officially launch in September.

This done while holding a meeting on transport and mass transit, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Tuesday. The meeting discussed the progress of the ongoing transport projects and talked about the plans to upgrade transportation facility in Karachi and throughout the province of Sindh.

Karachi to Receive 50 New Double-Decker Buses

Sharjeel Memon said that the city of Karachi will add 50 new double decker buses to the city’s fleet of modern public transport in October. The new buses will be safe, comfortable and effective in transporting large numbers of commuters daily.

The provincial government is trying to make the commute a better experience, which will help promote ridership on public transit.

EV Taxi Service to Start in September

The EV taxi will start operating in Karachi in September as part of Sindh’s green transport initiative. The electric taxi service will used to provide environmental-friendly transportation and to reduce fuel usage and carbon emissions.

The project falls under the province’s overall sustainable urban mobility policy.

1,000 EV Buses to Be Added Across Sindh

During the meeting it also confirmed that 1,000 electric buses would deployed in phases in Sindh by the end of 2026. The introduction of these EV buses will enhance the province’s public transport system and help meet the government’s goal of making public transport cleaner and more efficient.

The expansion will make the route more accessible and less polluting to the environment.

University Road Project to Improve Traffic Flow

Officials at the meeting said the mixed-traffic road on University Road will have one section open in September. The project expected to help alleviate congestion and enhance traffic flow on one of the busiest roads in Karachi.

Sharjeel Memon also directed the relevant authorities to finish all the construction of the Red Line BRT depots within the given timeline to facilitate the timely completion of the project.

New Peoples Bus Service Routes Approved

The Sindh government has also approved new Peoples Bus Service routes connecting:

  • Larkana to Qambar
  • Qambar to Shahdadkot

The new routes aimed at improving public transport connectivity and providing better travel facilities for residents in interior Sindh.

The province’s efforts to create a more sustainable and efficient public transport system enhanced by the introduction of electric buses, the launch of EV taxis and the gradual rollout of 1,000 electric buses.
