KMC Seals Petrol Pumps Over Safety Violations, Sparking Dispute with Dealers

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has sealed multiple fuel stations across the city, due to fire safety deficiencies. It triggered strong backlash from the petroleum dealers association over alleged procedural violations.

The Enforcement and Implementation Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) launched a targeted municipal sweep. It sealed at least four prominent petrol pumps, including locations near Jail Chowrangi, Islamia College and Lea Market.

Municipal officials stated that the inspections revealed inadequate fire-fighting equipment and unsatisfactory safety arrangements. They noted that strict compliance is necessary to protect public safety in densely populated urban zones.

Dealers Allege Unfair Procedure and Demand Inquiry

The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) strongly condemned the closures labeling the enforcement action unlawful. PPDA Chairman Malik Khuda Bakhsh, alongside Vice Chairmen Tariq Hassan and Anwar Kamal, stated that the municipal authority had formally issued a seven day notice for safety compliance. However they claimed that teams proceeded to seal several stations merely 12 to 24 hours after serving the notices, bypassing the mandated timeline.

The association has formally approached Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, requesting an immediate inquiry into the premature closures. While emphasizing support for general public safety initiatives, the PPDA has demanded the immediate de sealing of the affected stations and a fair opportunity for owners to upgrade their firefighting equipment without facing sudden business disruptions.
