KP Announces Public Holiday on 1st Muharram 17 June 2026

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has officially declared a public holiday on 1st Muharram 1448 AH, which will be observed on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, following the confirmation of the Islamic lunar calendar by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

All government offices, educational institutions and public departments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will observe the first day of the Islamic New Year on Monday, the official notification said.

The announcement follows the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmation that the new Islamic month of Muharram 17th of 1448 AH will start after the completion of the previous month of the lunar calendar in Pakistan.

This decision was taken following the meeting on moon sighting held in Lahore, where representatives of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the Scientific and University of Pakistan Research Council, religious scholars, and government officials attended.

Muharram is a month of intense religious importance to Muslims globally and is one of the holiest months in the Islamic lunar calendar, which also signifies the start of the new Hijri year. The Day of Ashura (10th Muharram) is on 26th June 2026.

Authorities have asked the public to respect the month and uphold law and order in religious activities and processions.
