Mandatory COVID-19 Test for International Passengers Arriving in Pakistan

In response to the global emergence of the new COVID-19 variant, JN-I, the Pakistani government has taken decisive steps to ensure the safety of its citizens. The National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) has announced a comprehensive strategy, including increased COVID-19 testing for passengers arriving from abroad.

The NCOC, acting as the vanguard against potential outbreaks, has directed provincial governments to intensify their Covid-19 testing efforts. During a recent meeting, the forum discussed the national situation concerning the JN-1 variant and unanimously approved the implementation of testing protocols at airports and borders.

Despite not recording any cases of the JN-I variant within its borders, Pakistan remains vigilant. The NCOC, in collaboration with the National Institute of Health (NIH), is closely monitoring the situation. According to an NIH spokesperson, concerns have raised globally about the JN-I variant alongside the Omicron variant, prompting heightened awareness and precautionary measures.

Dr. Nadeem Jan, the caretaker Federal Minister for National Health Services and Regulations, emphasized the government’s continuous monitoring efforts. While asserting a low risk of the variant spreading in Pakistan, Dr. Jan highlighted the importance of exercising caution.

Taking a proactive stance, provincial health departments have issued directives to district authorities. In response to the rise in respiratory infections and the documented cases of the JN-I variant in neighboring countries, random Covid-19 tests for individuals with influenza-like symptoms conducted.

In a communique addressed to all district health officers (DHOs), the letter underscored the significance of a vigilant approach. Citing the World Health Organization’s concerns about the escalating respiratory infections and the global dissemination of the JN-I variant, the communication emphasized the need for proactive measures to address any potential situation.
