Mohammad Amir Denies Rumours of Joining IPL 2027 Auction

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has denied reports that he plans to join the IPL 2027 auction as a British citizen.

Reports had been circulating in Indian media that Amir could use his British passport to enter the Indian Premier League. Amir addressed this directly in a post on X on Monday. He wrote, “Hi everyone just wanted to clarify news regarding IPL is not true.”

How the IPL Talk Started

The speculation grew after Amir registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) draft as a British national. The draft is set to take place in Dubai on November 3. Amir has been placed in the Platinum category for the draft.

Amir became a British citizen in May 2026 after getting a UK passport. He settled in the UK in 2020 and married British lawyer Narjis Khan. His British status had fuelled talk that he might follow the same path as former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who played in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders between 2012 and 2015 on a British passport.

The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa.

Amir’s Career So Far

Amir played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20Is for Pakistan. He last represented the national side at the 2024 T20 World Cup before stepping away from international cricket. He continues to play franchise cricket, including the PSL.

No. Amir has denied the current reports, but he has not ruled out playing in the IPL at some point in the future. Speaking during The Hundred in August 2026, he said he had not decided whether he would take part. He had also said earlier, on the Geo News show Haarna Mana Hai, that he would play in the IPL once he became eligible.
