Muharram 2026 Public Holidays in Pakistan Likely on June 25 and 26

With the beginning of the holy month of Muharram, expectations are growing that Pakistan may observe two public holidays at the end of June 2026 on account of Ashura.

The dates, however, will be determined only after the moon-sighting decision made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

Muharram 2026 Moon Sighting and Expected Dates

Based on initial astronomical calculations and based on experts’ predictions, the days of 9th and 10th Muharram, or Ashura, are expected to be on June 25 and June 26, 2026.

Public holiday is generally proclaimed by Government of Pakistan on 9th and 10th Muharram nationwide. The final announcement will however rely on the official sighting of the Muharram moon.

Authorities will be making an official notification shortly after the moon-sighting decision.

Public Holidays for Ashura in Pakistan

The government schools, institutes, banks, and offices in Pakistan are closed on the observance of Ashura on 9th and 10th Muharram.

The expected holidays for 2026 are:

SUPARCO Prediction for Muharram 1448

According to a spokesperson for SUPARCO, the chances of sighting the Muharram moon on June 15 are very low.

The spokesperson indicated that it seems 30 days of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH will have ended and that 1st of Muharram 1448 AH is expected to be on Tuesday, 17th of June 2026.

If this prediction proves correct, Ashura (10th Muharram) will fall on Friday, June 26, 2026.

Awaiting Official Announcement

Regardless of the astronomical predictions, the exact dates of the Muharram holidays in Pakistan would be confirmed only after the meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee and the official moon-sighting announcement.
