NDMA Issues Heavy Rain Alert Across Pakistan as PMD Forecasts Intense Monsoon from July 19

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide heavy rain alert after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast intense monsoon activity across several parts of the country. Heavy rainfall, windstorms and thunderstorms are expected with the weather system from July 19 to July 23, which will raise the risk for flash flooding, landslides, and urban flooding.

The PMD says that during the upcoming weekend, upper and central Pakistan will receive strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea. An additional weather system from the west is forecast to impact northern regions early in the week, bringing other heavy rain to susceptible areas.

Heavy Rain Expected in Several KP Districts

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) KP has issued a warning of heavy rain in several districts during the forecast period. The areas range from Chitral to Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Upper and Lower Kohistan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi to Abbottabad.

Heavy rains could carry the risk of flash flooding in local streams, landslides in mountainous regions and urban flooding in low-lying cities.

Authorities Directed to Stay Prepared

The NDMA has directed all provincial and district administration to stay alert. Rescue teams have been told to be ready for emergency response and officials have been requested to clear drainage systems, distribute sufficient water supplies and reserve adequate stocks of food, fuel and medicines.

Emergency services personnel and equipment will be on standby in high-risk areas for quick response in the event of deterioration in weather conditions.

Safety Advisory for Public and Farmers

The disaster management authorities have recommended farmers to cut matured crops and keep them safe before the heavy rains. Owners of livestock have also been advised to relocate livestock to ensure their protection from strong winds and thunderstorms.

Visitors and guests of the state have been urged to refrain from needless travel, particularly in hilly areas where landslides and road blockages can occur. Citizens have also been encouraged to avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and streams and take shelter during thunderstorms.

The NDMA highlighted that early warnings and preparedness measures play a significant role in mitigating the effects of extreme weather events. Authorities have also issued guidelines for local authorities to disseminate weather warnings through regional languages to keep communities informed and ready.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather advisories and follow instructions issued by local authorities throughout the monsoon spell.
