NEPRA Announces Electricity Price Hike for Consumers

Three-Month Adjustment Period to Impact Electricity Bills

In a recent development, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a statement regarding changes in electricity rates that will affect consumers across Pakistan. This move comes as part of a three-month adjustment period set to take place from October 2023 to March 2024, impacting consumers using 101 to 200 units of electricity per month.

Electricity Rate Changes

During this adjustment period, consumers falling within the 101 to 200 units usage bracket will experience an increase in their electricity bills. The rate hike varies depending on whether the consumer falls into the “protected” or “non-protected” category.

For protected consumers, who use up to 100 units per month, the new electricity rate will be Rs. 17.07 per unit. Meanwhile, for protected consumers using between 101 and 200 units per month, the rate will be Rs. 19.86 per unit.

Non-protected consumers, on the other hand, will face slightly higher rates. Domestic non-protected consumers can expect to pay Rs. 28.16 per unit for usage up to 100 units per month and Rs. 35.92 per unit for consumption between 101 and 200 units per month.

National Impact

It’s essential to note that these adjustments will be applicable nationwide, including major cities like Karachi and throughout Pakistan. However, there is an exemption for lifeline domestic consumers, who will not be subject to this three-month adjustment period.

Background

Previously, NEPRA had set an adjustment rate of Rs. 3.28 per unit for a three-month period, which had garnered attention for its perceived high cost. With the approval of the federal government, the new rate adjustments will now be implemented, providing some clarity to consumers regarding their upcoming electricity bills.

Payment Structure

Consumers will have to budget for additional payments over a six-month period, from October 2023 to March 2024, to cover the adjustment. This translates to an extra cost of Rs. 3.28 per unit on their monthly electricity bills. It’s important to note that this adjustment will apply to both protected and non-protected consumers, impacting households across Pakistan.

In conclusion, NEPRA’s announcement of electricity price adjustments during the three-month period from October 2023 to March 2024 has generated interest and concerns among consumers. The varying rates for protected and non-protected consumers will have implications for electricity bills, prompting households to manage their energy consumption and budget effectively during this period of change.
