New Monsoon System Enters Pakistan, PMD Issues Heavy Rain and Flood Alert

A new monsoon system has entered Pakistan under the influence of a deep depression over India’s Madhya Pradesh, prompting the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) to issue a nationwide weather alert for heavy rainfall, urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides.

The PMD weather forecast said that the deep depression is tracking westwards, which has enabled strong monsoon currents to penetrate eastern and central regions of Pakistan. Widespread rain and thunderstorms are forecast with the weather system on July 31 and August 1.

The department has alerted that heavy to very heavy rainfall will be possible in several parts of the country. Heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding in low lying areas of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Potohar, Peshawar, Nowshera, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and parts of Sindh.

The PMD has also cautioned about a high risk of landslides in the hilly areas of Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where roads and infrastructure may be affected by heavy rain that could trigger landslides.

Besides, flash floods are likely in Islamabad, North-Eastern Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dera Ghazi Khan, Hill torrents and North-Eastern Balochistan due to heavy rain expected during the next two days.

Thunderstorms are expected in rain in Punjab, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and northeast Balochistan with isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rain over them.

The Meteorological Department has urged residents to be aware and take precautionary measures, including not traveling needlessly during heavy rains and staying informed of the latest PMD alerts, as a way to reduce risks while the heavy rain is expected in low-lying and mountainous areas.

Authorities are also likely to keep a close watch on vulnerable areas, as the new Pakistan monsoon system is expected to impact the weather conditions in the country.
