Pakistan Farmers Protest Prepare Nationwide Over Wheat Crisis

Thousands of farmers in Pakistan set to launch nationwide protests starting May 10, led by the Kissan Ittehad Pakistan organization. The protests are in response to the ongoing wheat crisis, with discontent brewing over plummeting wheat rates in the market, falling well below the support price of Rs3,900 per 40kg.

Blame has directed at the decision to import wheat despite a reported “bumper crop” locally. Farmers’ frustrations have led to previous protests in Lahore and other cities, prompting a government crackdown.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s administration faces criticism for not thoroughly investigating the wheat import decision and taking action against those responsible. A newly formed cabinet committee aims to scrutinize why the previous caretaker government imported wheat despite ample domestic supply.

Khalid Khokhar, president of the Kissan Ittehad Pakistan, expressed determination to relaunch nationwide protests, emphasizing the need to protect farmers’ interests and salvage the nation from financial losses. He highlighted the significant impact of the wheat import on the national treasury, estimating a loss of over Rs400 billion.

Khokhar also criticized the lack of government regulation, particularly regarding urea prices, which has further burdened farmers financially. The upcoming protests expected to involve thousands of farmers, their families, and livestock, starting in Multan and spreading across the country.

The Kissan Ittehad Pakistan aims to draw attention to the crucial role of agriculture and the need for relief measures to support farmers, who are integral to the nation’s economy.
