Pakistan Railways to Upgrade Network with 230 New High-Speed Passenger Coaches

A new era of speed and efficiency is dawning in Pakistan as the country’s railway system undergoes a significant transformation. The Pakistan Railways is on the brink of a major upgrade, with plans to acquire 230 passenger coaches and 820 Capacity Wagons under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

The procurement plan aims to enhance the speed of trains and ensure punctuality. As of now, 46 Completely-Built-Up (CBU) passenger coaches have procured, while the remaining 184 will manufactured domestically. These coaches designed to travel at a speed of 160km/h.

The railway department is also focusing on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the railway track to improve the speed of locomotives. This includes revamping the infrastructure, such as the track and signaling system from Karachi to Peshawar, Main Line-I (ML-I), and doubling the track from Lahore to Peshawar (462.20 Km).

The ML-I project, part of the China-Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC), aims to upgrade the 1,726-kilometer track to improve speed up to 160 kilometers per hour. The rolling stock procured under this project will be capable of running at this speed. Additionally, the department has a dedicated fleet of 55 diesel-electric locomotives of 4000-4500 HP for freight operation to cater to maximum haulage at higher speeds.

For the safety of train operations, the Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) system installed on 48 stations of ML-I. This system improves signaling and interlocking for higher speed.

Pakistan Railways, a large organization with around 63,000 employees, ensures the welfare of its employees through various activities. These include healthcare facilities, government accommodation, staff benevolent funds, benefits, and incentives provided through the Prime Minister’s Family Assistance Package policy for deceased employees’ families, and more.

This transformation marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s transportation sector, promising a future of speed, efficiency, and improved services for the people of Pakistan.
