Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its maritime and automotive sectors as the country’s first Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipment carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs) arrived at Karachi Port.
The first-ever shipment of electric vehicles (EVs) arrived in Pakistan via a RoRo vessel – MV Grande Shanghai in the Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL). RoRo vessels provide the ability to drive vehicles directly on and off the vessel which makes the loading and unloading more efficient, safe and quick than conventional cargo vessels.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry called the arrival of Pakistan’s first RoRo EV shipment a historic moment for Pakistan’s maritime sector. The successful operation demonstrates Pakistan’s increasing capacity to manage the modern methods of shipping and will help develop more efficient vehicle importing logistics, he added.
The minister also noted that the introduction of the RoRo ship into the Karachi port is an important milestone for the modernization of the port sector and enhancing Pakistan’s maritime trade. He added that RoRo shipping is a common practice globally as it optimizes cargo handling time and operational efficiency.
The well managed operations of the first RoRo shipment will make people more interested in advanced shipping at Karachi Port. The project will also likely boost Pakistan’s trade and logistics capabilities, as well as its growing demand for electric vehicles.
The delivery of over 2,000 electric vehicles via the RoRo shipment for the first time in Pakistan reflects the Karachi Port’s strides towards offering world-class and best practices in shipping.
