In a landmark move, Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has launched Pakistan’s inaugural virtual women’s police station, “Meri Awaz, Maryam Nawaz”. This initiative, a first of its kind, aims to address women’s issues, including harassment, with utmost priority and confidentiality.
The virtual police station, set up under the Punjab Safe City Authority, is staffed by IT-graduate female police communication officers. Women can reach out to this virtual station via various platforms, including 15 calls, Women Safety App live chat, video call feature, Punjab Police App, and Safe City web portal. The station ensures women’s anonymity, allowing them to report issues without disclosing their names or addresses.
A unique feature of this virtual station is the live video call, enabling women to share their location and problems. The station guides through all stages of FIR registration, investigation, and trial. Additionally, the implementation of 100 modern emergency panic 15 buttons across Lahore ensures immediate contact with Safe City.
Free WiFi in Lahore
Alongside the virtual station, the Chief Minister has also launched a free Wi-Fi service at over 50 locations in Lahore, named “CM Maryam Nawaz Free Wi-Fi”. Furthermore, Lahore has become the first city in South Asia to initiate traffic violation monitoring through artificial intelligence.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently visited the virtual women’s police station to observe its operations and interact with the Women’s Communication Officer. She has also instructed for the swift completion of the hostel and daycare center for women officers.
This initiative marks a significant step towards women’s empowerment and safety in Pakistan, setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
