Pakistan’s Tech Boost: PayPal Remittances & Smartphone Plans Unveiled

In a groundbreaking move, the Pakistani government has addressed a longstanding demand of freelancers by facilitating remittances through the renowned international gateway, PayPal. Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Dr Umar Saif, announced this development, highlighting that the Cabinet has approved the National Space Policy to allow private-sector companies to utilize low-orbit satellites for satellite communication services.

Dr Saif outlined a series of digital initiatives slated for launch next week, marking a significant leap for Pakistan in becoming a prominent “Tech Destination.” Among these initiatives is the formalization of an agreement with PayPal, scheduled for a grand launch ceremony on January 11. Although PayPal is not directly establishing operations in Pakistan, the agreement allows remittances to be channeled through a third party, addressing the absence of a financial instrument for facilitating payments.

Additionally, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication aims to enhance smartphone accessibility among the populace. Starting from January 12, 2024, a collaborative initiative with telecom companies will offer customers the latest smartphone models through easy installment plans. Notably, Jazz plans to introduce iPhone installment options, bringing premium devices within reach for a broader audience.

To promote responsible financial behavior, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will implement measures such as blocking handsets through the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS) in cases of installment non-payment. This policy aims to expand the benefits of mobile broadband, particularly targeting low-income segments, by allowing telecom companies to directly offer smartphones through installment plans.

With these strategic moves, Pakistan is poised to witness a transformative shift in its technological landscape, fostering financial inclusivity and technological advancement.
