Pakistan’s VPN usage skyrocketed due to internet restrictions, more than tripling in recent days. This sudden surge comes after stricter social media restrictions were reportedly imposed by the government.
An independent report from Top10VPN revealed that VPN usage jumped by 102% on November 25, compared to the daily average of the last month. Just a day later, the demand spiked even higher, soaring to 213%. The restrictions are believed to be linked to the anticipated protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), prompting tighter control on platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
For many users, accessing these platforms without a VPN has become almost impossible. Websites like Downdetector have confirmed disruptions across several major social media platforms, though authorities haven’t issued a clear explanation. This lack of communication has added to public frustration, with many questioning the sudden restrictions.
In regions like Punjab, the situation is even more challenging. Areas such as Multan, Rajanpur, Gujrat, and Dera Ghazi Khan have reported internet outages, leaving residents struggling with basic online communication.
While VPNs have provided a workaround, they come with their own headaches. Users complain of slower speeds and poor connectivity, making the already frustrating experience of staying connected even harder.
As people turn to VPNs for relief, the debate over online freedom and government control has reignited in Pakistan, with citizens voicing their concerns over transparency and access to digital platforms. The uncertainty around how long these restrictions will last only deepens the anxiety among internet users nationwide.
