PEMRA Instructs TV Channels to Avoid Live Coverage of Blasts and Attacks

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has told satellite TV channels to avoid live coverage of blasts, shootings and terrorist attacks. Broadcasters must air only information confirmed by the relevant government department or law enforcement agency.

An Old Ban With a Fresh Warning

The directive, dated October 13, 2026, repeats restrictions under PEMRA’s February 20, 2023 prohibition order. The instructions apply to satellite television licensees operating news, current affairs and regional-language channels.

Live Reports and Replays Face Limits

The notice covers broadcasting, repeat broadcasts and live coverage of explosions, gunfire, terrorist attacks and other “unfortunate/unpleasant” incidents. The broader phrase has no separate definition in the notice.

PEMRA’s instructions still provide for verified news updates. Channels must obtain confirmation from the relevant department or law enforcement agency before airing information about these incidents.

A Pause Before News Reaches Your Screen

PEMRA has also directed channels to use their broadcast delay systems effectively and form independent editorial boards.

A time-delay system holds a feed briefly before transmission, giving editors time to review material before viewers see the broadcast.

The notice cites PEMRA laws, the Supreme Court’s judgment in Suo Motu Case No. 28 of 2018 and an Islamabad High Court order dated September 5, 2022, in connection with these requirements.

PEMRA warned of action under Sections 29-A, 30 and 33 of the PEMRA Ordinance, 2002, as amended, for violations. The notice does not announce a penalty against any named channel.
