The fares of the Peoples Bus Service have been increased by 20% to 60% across various routes in Karachi. The new fare structure has been implemented from February 1, 2025, and updated rate lists have been displayed on all buses.
Reason Behind the Fare Hike
According to the Sindh government, this decision aims to expand the fleet of buses and reduce government expenditure on subsidies. Sindh Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, stated that over 100,000 passengers travel daily on the Red Line Bus, with the government providing a subsidy of over Rs. 50 per passenger.
The minister further explained that the Sindh cabinet was advised to either reduce or eliminate subsidies to utilize the funds for purchasing more buses and improving public transport services in the city.
Public Reaction to Karachi Red Bus New Fare
The fare hike has sparked public outrage, with citizens rejecting the increase and calling it an additional burden on their daily expenses. Many commuters argue that rising inflation and food prices have already made life difficult, and increasing transport fares will further affect the working class.
Current Fare Structure of Peoples Bus Service
Following the latest increase, the minimum fare for the Peoples Bus Service has been set at Rs. 50, while the maximum fare is now Rs. 100. This decision had been made several days ago, but official implementation began on February 1, 2025.
Government’s Stance on the Issue
Despite the fare hike, the Sindh government has assured that subsidies will still be provided and further steps will be taken to enhance the Peoples Bus Service.
