Petrol Prices May Drop in Pakistan from July 16 Amid Currency Improvement

As per the official sources, Pakistanis may see some relief in petrol prices for the second half of July as the government plans to pass on the benefit of a stronger rupee against the US dollar. However, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged the government to increase the petrol prices in Pakistan, especially on high-speed diesel, to meet its fiscal targets.

The government is expected to review the prices of petroleum products today for the next fortnight. Sources said that the ex-depot price of petrol could go down by around Rs10 per litre, while the ex-depot price of high-speed diesel could go up by more than Rs3.50 per litre. Also, the prices of light-speed diesel and kerosene are also likely to increase.

The global prices of oil products have risen in recent days, but the rupee has gained value against the dollar after receiving funds from the IMF and a friendly country. The government is currently charging Rs50 per litre petroleum levy on high-speed diesel, while the IMF wants it to be raised to Rs60 per litre. Furthermore, the government may compromise by increasing the levy by Rs5 per litre.

In the previous fortnight, the government kept petrol prices unchanged till 15 July. The decision was aimed at providing relief to the people who are facing record inflation and high food and fuel costs.
