Political Ads and Flags Ban in Karachi Buildings During Elections

In a significant move, Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi of Karachi has called for a halt to political advertisements, including the hoisting of flags and banners, on properties owned by the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) in anticipation of the upcoming general elections scheduled for Feb 8.

Expressing concern in a formal letter addressed to Commissioner Karachi, Zaidi highlighted the misuse of municipal infrastructure for “political purposes/advertisement” by several political parties, who have been installing party flags and banners. Zaidi emphasized the need to maintain the city’s aesthetic appeal and efficiency while curbing unnecessary expenses incurred by the council.

The Municipal Commissioner also noted a surge in political wall chalking leading up to the general elections, emphasizing that such practices not only mar the city’s appearance but also contribute to the operational costs of the council. Urging the Commissioner to take decisive action, Zaidi requested the prohibition of hoisting flags and banners on street light poles, pedestrian bridges, bridges & underpasses, gantries, and other municipal infrastructure.

This proactive stance by Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi aims to ensure a cleaner and visually appealing cityscape while curbing the misuse of public property for political gains. As the general elections approach, this initiative is expected to foster a more organized and visually pleasing urban environment, demonstrating the commitment to civic responsibility.
