Punjab Government Delays Weekly School Lockdown Amid Smog Concerns

In a recent development, the Punjab government has clarified its position regarding the proposed weekly school lockdown amid concerns about smog in the region. Contrary to earlier media reports, the government has not yet finalized any decisions in this regard.

The government engaged in meaningful discussions with a panel of experts focused on addressing the smog issue in the provincial capital. They emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to combat air pollution. Several proposals put forth by these experts will undergo thorough examination and deliberation during an upcoming Cabinet meeting.

It’s worth noting that the recent occurrence of rain has temporarily improved the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore. However, the Punjab government emphasized the importance of devising a long-term plan to maintain and further improve the AQI in the region.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) had previously issued a directive to suspend new construction projects for a period of six months, from October to March, to mitigate the alarming air pollution levels in the city.

The government remains committed to addressing the smog issue effectively, and any decisions related to school shutdowns or other measures will be made after careful consideration and expert consultation. Further updates will be provided after the Cabinet meeting.
