Punjab Electric Bus Service Expanded to Six More Districts
The provincial government states that the expansion is part of their wider plans to revamp public transport and curb environmental pollution. New electric buses will air-conditioned, offer comfortable seating and be passenger-friendly, giving commuters a safer, cleaner and more reliable journey.
The project designed to enhance the quality of everyday commuting for local residents and boost the use of environmentally sensitive public transport.
Rs. 20 Bus Fare and Free Travel for Students
The government has set the fare at Rs. 20 per ride, which is accessible to people from all income groups.
One of the key achievements of the program is free transportation for students, which significantly lowers travel costs for thousands of families in Punjab. The service will also make a huge difference for women, senior citizens and daily wage workers as it provides safe and economical commuting, according to officials.
Supporting Cleaner and Sustainable Transportation
This development of electric vehicles for public transport is likely to make a significant contribution to decarbonizing transport, enhancing air quality and reducing the use of fossil fuel-based vehicles in urban areas.
The goal is to transition the city’s public transport fleet from diesel-powered buses to electric ones, helping to reduce emissions and tackle environmental issues linked to urban sprawl.
Punjab Plans to Add 5,000 Electric Buses
The provincial government has also announced an ambitious expansion roadmap for the Green Bus Service.
Under the plan:
- Around 1,100 electric buses will be added during the current year.
- The fleet is expected to grow to nearly 5,000 electric buses over the next three years.
- The network will gradually expand from major cities to tehsil-level areas, creating a province-wide public transportation system.
Officials say the long-term goal is to provide modern, affordable, and environmentally responsible transport to more communities across Punjab.
