In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, the Punjab School Education Department has declared a province-wide ban on plastic bags in all government schools. This policy, communicated via an official letter to education authorities, prohibits students from carrying items in plastic bags and restricts canteens and cafeterias from using them.
However, the department’s initiative extends beyond the plastic ban. Schools are encouraged to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as planting trees along their boundaries and establishing “Miwaki forests” – densely populated urban forests. These measures aim to enhance air quality and beautify school premises without encroaching on playground spaces. To further promote environmental responsibility, color-coded bins will be installed for proper waste segregation.
This school-centric plastic ban aligns with the broader provincial initiative. The Punjab government has already announced a comprehensive ban on plastic bags across the province, set to commence on June 6th, 2024.
Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, the driving force behind the anti-smog campaign, underscored the government’s dedication to environmental enhancement. She spotlighted Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s objectives in achieving initial milestones in waste reduction, air quality improvement, and increased plantation by June 30th.
The plan also encompasses mandatory fitness certificates for all vehicles, annual inspections, and a transition to solar energy for government buildings. These collective efforts aim to foster a cleaner and more sustainable Punjab, setting a precedent for other provinces to follow.
