In a strategic move to combat the pervasive smog crisis gripping the worst-hit cities of the province, the caretaker Punjab government is contemplating a temporary closure of schools, colleges, and universities. This proactive measure is set to span three days, commencing from tomorrow, to mitigate the adverse effects of the smog.
Insider reports reveal that the government is inclined to shutter educational institutions in various cities from November 24 to 26, with an official decision expected later today. Simultaneously, a proposal to enforce section 144 in Lahore and establish police pickets across the city is under consideration.
This announcement follows a recent mandate issued by the Punjab government, compelling citizens to wear face masks when venturing outside their homes in ten smog-affected districts of the province. Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the decision’s urgency in light of the rapidly deteriorating air quality in Punjab.
Taking to social media, Naqvi declared, “The Punjab Government announces a one-week mandate for wearing face masks for all citizens in smog-affected districts of Punjab. Prioritizing health is our collective responsibility. Please adhere to the guidelines for a safer community.”
As per the official notification shared by Naqvi, the face mask mandate will be enforced in Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad, Sialkot, and Mandi Bahauddin from November 20 to November 26.
Amidst these proactive measures, Lahore finds itself once again at the unfortunate pinnacle, being ranked as the most polluted city in the world on this Thursday. The confluence of government initiatives and environmental challenges underscores the critical need for collective efforts in addressing and alleviating the ongoing smog crisis.
