Sindh HC Ordered FIRs for Political Banners on Public Properties in Karachi

In a landmark decision, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has taken a stern stance against political parties and companies displaying banners and advertisements on public property. The court, responding to a plea challenging the installation of billboards, signboards, and banners on public spaces, has ordered the registration of FIRs against candidates whose names, pictures, or posters are found on any public property.

The written verdict emphasizes the need for accountability, with the court directing the Karachi commissioner, DCs, KMC, and cantonment boards to ensure the prompt removal of all billboards, hoardings, and advertisements from public properties across the city. This move aimed at preserving the aesthetic appeal of public spaces and preventing the unauthorized use of such spaces for promotional activities.

Furthermore, the court has set a deadline for the authorities to submit an implementation report by January 29, showcasing their progress in executing the removal orders. This indicates the court’s commitment to swift and effective action in enforcing its directives.

In an earlier inquiry, a division bench led by Justice Nadeem Akhtar probed the provincial law officer, KMC, and other relevant entities regarding the status of billboard removal from public properties. The Cantonment Board Clifton reported that all billboards within its jurisdiction had successfully taken down. Additionally, a representative from the Malir Cantonment Board clarified that no permission had granted for the installation of billboards on any public property under their purview.

This decisive move by the Sindh High Court underscores its dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the sanctity of public spaces. As the city awaits the removal of these unauthorized advertisements, the public can anticipate a cleaner, aesthetically pleasing environment.
