AI Is Going Out of Control; Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Calls for a Slowdown

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called on AI companies to slow down the development of advanced AI systems. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk have supported his call as concerns grow over AI safety.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has asked AI companies to slow down the development of powerful AI models.

Amodei said the industry needs more time to improve safety measures. He warned that developing AI too quickly could create serious risks.

“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei said in a post on his website.

He said stopping AI development completely would also create problems. It could deny people the benefits of the technology. It could also leave AI development in the hands of governments that do not follow the same safety rules.

Altman and Musk Support Call

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with Amodei’s call.

“I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier,” Altman said.

Elon Musk also supported Amodei. “Dario is right,” Musk wrote on X.

Amodei also called for outside experts to check whether AI companies are following safety rules. He said Anthropic would give a team of independent experts access to its work.

Altman said OpenAI would also consider similar outside checks.

The calls come after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon left the AI industry. Coxon said AI companies are “gambling with our lives” by racing toward systems that could improve themselves.

Coxon said he was concerned that such systems could become difficult for people to control.

Concerns Over AI Agents

Amodei also referred to an incident involving AI agents during testing at OpenAI.

AI agents are programs that can perform tasks without constant human control. Amodei said the incident showed how these systems could act in unexpected ways.

He warned that more advanced AI agents could cause serious damage if companies do not improve safety measures.

Amodei also called for AI companies to work together on common safety rules. He said governments should also cooperate on AI safety.
