WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that lets iPhone users connect their own third-party agents and chat with them inside the app. The feature is currently available to a limited number of users in selected countries.
WhatsApp has started testing third-party agent chats on iPhone. The feature lets users create an agent from WhatsApp settings and connect it to their account without using a separate chat app.
Users can create up to five agents on one WhatsApp account. They can also choose a name and profile picture for each agent. After creating an agent, WhatsApp generates an API key that users can copy and add to the service where the agent is hosted
The API key gives control over the agent. WhatsApp advises users not to share it with other people. Users can also reset the key and create a new one if needed.
Agents Can Only See Shared Messages
Once connected, an agent appears in WhatsApp like a normal chat. The agent can only access information that the user shares with it. It cannot access other WhatsApp chats, contacts or media on the phone.
WhatsApp says third-party agent chats are different from personal chats when it comes to encryption. These conversations are not considered end-to-end encrypted because Meta manages the messages through a secure service on behalf of the agent developer. The agent developer can access messages sent to the agent.
Personal WhatsApp messages and calls between users remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
The feature is currently rolling out through the WhatsApp beta for iOS and remains available to a very limited number of users. WhatsApp says third-party agent chats are also available only in selected regions.
