Instagram New Feature will notify Users to take a Break

Instagram new feature is under testing that will prompt users to take a break after a long session. Digital well being and Mental Health are something the Tech giants constantly receive criticism for. Users spend a lot of their productive time scrolling through Social media Apps. It causes fatigue, lack of sleep, and distorting attention.

Now, with the raising concerns, Instagram is testing a new digital well being feature, ‘Take a Break’. It allows users to schedule reminders to leave the app after a specified amount of time. Users will be able to set the timer when they want to be notified. However, the feature will not come as default but requires user permission and preference.

When the ‘take a break’ feature detects that you are spending too much time on the app, it will send a reminder. This comes as research shows that the social media platform might harm young people’s mental health. Social media addiction is a common thing now. It is mostly affecting Teens and Youth who gets stick to their screens aimlessly surfing and scrolling.

This could encourage users to be more conscious of their Instagram interaction, or at the absolute least, serve as a gentle reminder to unplug from time to time rather than getting sucked into content rabbit holes and/or mindless scrolling for hours on end.

It seems like after the Facebook name change, Meta is working on various Digital Well-being features. However, the Take a Break feature on Instagram will not be activated by default. Users will have to turn it on to receive in-app notifications to stop using the app after 10, 20, or 30 minutes of continuous use.
