Microsoft has introduced a voluntary exit program for around 60,000 employees across four countries as the technology giant adjusts its workforce amid growing investment in artificial intelligence.
Announced on October 26, 2026, the Voluntary Exit Offer is available to eligible employees in participating teams in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom. Staff at level 70 and below on Microsoft’s internal job scale can qualify, including some employees with vice president titles. The offer does not cover every team.
Microsoft employed around 223,000 people worldwide at the end of June 2026. The 60,000 figure represents the approximate number eligible for the offer, not the number expected to leave.
Microsoft Adjusts Workforce as AI Costs Rise
Microsoft is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and data centers while restructuring parts of its business. The voluntary program gives eligible employees financial support and career planning resources if they choose to leave.
“This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company with a new alternative to make this transition with support,” Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said in a memo to staff. She added that the scheme would help participating teams adapt to changing workforce needs.
The company has not announced how many employees it expects to accept the offer.
Earlier Buyouts and Job Cuts
The new scheme follows Microsoft’s voluntary retirement program earlier in 2026, which targeted eligible US employees. Around 30 per cent of approximately 8,750 eligible workers accepted that offer, according to reports.
In July, Microsoft also announced around 4,800 job cuts as it reorganized its operations, including its Xbox gaming business. The latest voluntary exit offer gives eligible employees another option as the company continues adjusting its workforce and prioritizing investment in AI.
