Bangladesh, Sri Lanka Reach Asian Games Semifinals After Washouts

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka reached the Asian Games 2026 cricket semifinals after rain washed out both quarterfinals in Nisshin on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka were scheduled to play Nepal in the third quarterfinal at Korogi Sports Park. Persistent rain forced officials to abandon the match without a toss or a ball being bowled.

Bangladesh then faced a similar situation against Malaysia in the fourth quarterfinal. Rain continued in Nisshin and the match was called off before play could begin.

Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Advance

Sri Lanka advanced because of their higher seeding in the ICC T20I rankings. Bangladesh also progressed because they held the higher seeding over Malaysia.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka entered the tournament as the four seeded teams. They received direct places in the quarterfinals.

Nepal and Malaysia were eliminated after the washouts.

The results have set up the Asian Games semifinals for October 1. Pakistan will face Bangladesh in the first semifinal. India will meet Sri Lanka in the second semifinal.

The men’s cricket competition is being played in the T20 format at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
