Australia has appointed former batter Mike Hussey as a coaching consultant for next year’s Ashes series and the 2027 World Cup. The move came on Friday.
Hussey will also help the team during this month’s home T20 series against England and the four-Test series against New Zealand that follows. His role extends further ahead, too, covering the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Hussey revealed in August that England’s new red-ball coach, Stephen Fleming, had approached him to be their Test batting mentor. He turned that offer down. Instead, he chose to help Australia fix a batting problem that showed up during their recent 2-1 Test series loss in South Africa.
Known as “Mr Cricket” for his technical eye, Hussey played more than 300 matches for Australia across all formats. He has worked with the Australian team before, mainly as a batting consultant ahead of the yearly Perth Test.
His coaching record goes beyond Australia, too. He was part of England’s staff when they won the 2022 T20 World Cup. He also spent years as Chennai Super Kings’ batting coach in the IPL under Fleming, and coached Welsh Fire in this year’s edition of The Hundred.
“I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” Hussey said. “This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period.”
