Pakistan Cricket Legend Saeed Ahmed Passes Away at 86

Pakistan’s cricket fraternity is in mourning as former captain and all-rounder, Saeed Ahmed, passed away in Lahore at 86 following a short illness. Saeed’s illustrious career spanned from 1958 to 1973, during which he played 41 Test matches. He briefly led the team in 1969 for three Test matches against England, stepping into the shoes of Hanif Mohammad.

Saeed’s cricketing prowess was evident in his impressive tally of 2991 Test runs, which included five centuries, three of which scored against India. Besides being a skilled batsman, Saeed was also a competent off-spinner, claiming 22 Test wickets.

Born in 1937 in Jalandhar, then part of British India and now in Indian Punjab, Saeed made his debut at 20 against the West Indies. He was part of the renowned drawn Test in Bridgetown, he partnered with Hanif Mohammad for a 154-run third-wicket stand.

Saeed, known for his graceful batting style and powerful drives. He ended his career with a batting average of 40.01, mirroring his first-class average of 40.02. His first Test century, a score of 150, came against a formidable West Indies attack in Georgetown.

Despite being a consistent performer for Pakistan, Saeed’s career ended on a sour note. During Pakistan’s 1972 tour of Australia, a disagreement with Dennis Lillee led to Saeed excusing himself from the third Test due to a back injury. The board, suspecting foul play, sent him home, marking the end of his international career.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed his condolences, stating, “The PCB deeply saddened by the loss of our former Test captain, Saeed Ahmed. He served Pakistan with dedication, and we honour his contributions to the Test team.”

Post-retirement, Saeed distanced himself from cricket. He led a solitary life in Lahore, with his declining health necessitating frequent hospital visits. He admitted to the hospital on Wednesday and passed away shortly after.
