T20 World Cup 2026: ICC Begins Negotiations as Pakistan Boycotts Match Against India

The ICC has deployed Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja for emergency back-channel talks with the PCB. This follows Pakistan’s government-led decision to boycott the February 15 T20 World Cup match against India. With $250 million in revenue at stake, the cricket world awaits a resolution before the tournament begins on February 7.

The T20 World Cup 2026 faces a massive commercial threat. The Government of Pakistan recently cleared its team to travel to Sri Lanka but explicitly barred them from playing India on February 15.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is not sitting idle. They have tasked Imran Khwaja, representing the Singapore Cricket Association, to lead secret negotiations. Khwaja is now the primary “peacemaker” between the PCB and the global governing body.

Pakistan’s boycott is a protest. It stems from the ICC replacing Bangladesh with Scotland earlier this year. Bangladesh had refused to tour India due to security concerns, and Pakistan is now standing in solidarity.

The ICC warns that “selective participation” undermines the sport’s integrity. If the boycott stands, the consequences for the PCB are severe:

• Financial Blow: The ICC could withhold Pakistan’s $35 million revenue share.
• Walkover: India will receive two points automatically on match day.
• NRR Penalty: Pakistan will suffer a massive Net Run Rate hit, potentially ending their Super 8 hopes.

Despite the noise, the PCB has not yet formally notified the ICC of the boycott. This silence gives Khwaja a narrow window to secure a U-turn. Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha and his squad are already in Colombo, preparing for their opener against the Netherlands.
