India batter Virat Kohli has confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be hislast World Cup for India, bringing his World Cup career closer to its final chapter.
Kohli made the announcement while speaking to broadcaster JioStar ahead of India’s ODI series against the West Indies. He said the 2027 World Cup will be his motivation and that he is ready to give everything to help India win the title.
“I’m going to play for India” at the last World Cup, Kohli said, adding that his goal is to win the tournament and give everything required for that achievement.
Fifth World Cup for Kohli
The 2027 World Cup will be Kohli’s fifth ODI World Cup. He was part of India’s title-winning team in 2011. India then reached the final in 2023 but lost to Australia.
The tournament will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November 2027.
Kohli has already retired from Test cricket and T20 internationals. He now represents India only in ODIs.
The 37-year-old also spoke about the demands of a 50-over World Cup. He said maintaining T20-level intensity across multiple matches makes the tournament physically and mentally demanding, especially in foreign conditions.
Kohli also reached another career milestone on September 27. He became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to score15,000 ODI runs. He reached the mark in his 303rd innings and became the fastest batter to achieve it.
Kohli has scored 15,021 ODI runs after reaching the milestone, along with 54 ODI centuries.
