Moscow will host the World Weightlifting Championships in 2030, marking Russia’s first award of a world championship in an Olympic sport since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced the decision on October 25, 2026. Moscow last hosted the championships in 1983. The 2030 event will also serve as a qualifying competition for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
The IWF also awarded the 2029 World Weightlifting Championships to Ahmedabad, India. Its executive board selected the host cities as part of its plans for the international competition calendar through 2030.
Russia Welcomes Hosting Decision
The Russian Weightlifting Federation welcomed the announcement. Its president, Alexander Vinokurov, thanked the international body for its trust and said Russia was ready to host major competitions after years of limited access to international sporting events.
The decision follows changes in international sports policies towards Russia and Belarus. The 2025 World Aquatics Championships, originally scheduled for Kazan, Russia, moved to Singapore.
Some Russian athletes competed as neutrals at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2026 Winter Olympics. In July 2026, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. However, the IOC has not decided whether Russian athletes can use their national flag, colours and anthem at future Olympic Games.
Ukraine Challenges Olympic Decision
Ukraine has opposed Russia’s return to international sports. Its National Olympic Committee filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July, challenging the IOC’s decision to reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee.
The International Paralympic Committee took a separate decision in September 2025, restoring the full membership rights of Russia and Belarus. This paved the way for eligible athletes from both countries to compete under their national flags, subject to the rules of individual sports federations.
Meanwhile, the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships begin in Ningbo, China, on October 27 and run until November 8. Five Ukrainian athletes are taking part in the competition, which is also a qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
