The INS Sumitra led the operation, successfully freeing 19 Pakistani crew members from 11 Somali pirates. Gripping navy images showcased armed pirates with AK-47 rifles on the captured vessel, while a hovering navy helicopter symbolized the relentless pursuit of justice.
Under the cover of darkness, elite commandos executed a precise boarding of the fishing boat. Following a recent successful mission freeing 17 crew members from the Iranian-flagged Iman fishing vessel, Indian forces executed another heroic rescue. Seychelles commandos also achieved the liberation of the Sri Lankan fishing vessel Lorenzo Putha-4 and its six-man crew, ending a three-day ordeal.
Surging piracy off Somalia raises concerns about a resurgence in Indian Ocean raids. Concurrently, increased attacks by Yemen’s Houthi fighters add to the threat. Naval forces redirected from the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea unintentionally create a security gap, offering pirates an opportunity.
