India’s plan to host the 2036 Olympic Games has sparked debate over whether the country should focus more on public needs before hosting a major sporting event.
Critics say India should address hunger, air pollution, healthcare costs and other basic needs before spending money on the Olympics.
According to the UNDP’s 2025 Human Development Report, India ranks 130th out of 193 countries. The 2025 Global Hunger Index ranks India 102nd out of 123 countries. The report also highlights high levels of child malnutrition.
Air pollution is another concern. The World Health Organization recommends an annual average limit of 5 micrograms per cubic metre for PM2.5 fine particles. These particles can harm human health.
India is among seven countries currently in talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about hosting the 2036 Games. The other countries are Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Türkiye.
The IOC is expected to select the host in 2029. India has not yet secured the hosting rights. The debate raises a key question: how should India balance its Olympic ambitions with the needs of people who lack access to basic services?
