Democrats have won control of both the US House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. The result is a sharp setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
NBC News projects Democrats will hold at least 252 House seats, well past the 218 needed for a majority. In the Senate, Democrats flipped seats in Texas, Ohio, Kansas, and South Carolina, taking control of the chamber for the first time in years.
What Trump Said
Trump told the New York Times late Tuesday that he accepts the results. “I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” he said. He added that he is ready to work with Democrats going forward. Trump also said Republican losses may have been different had he been on the ballot himself.
Key Senate Wins for Democrats
Several races stood out on election night:
- In Texas, James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton. This gives Democrats their first Texas Senate win since 1988.
- In Ohio, Sherrod Brown defeated Republican incumbent Jon Husted.
- In South Carolina, Annie Andrews defeated Republican Senator Darline Graham.
- In Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan held the seat for Democrats.
- In Maine, Troy Jackson defeated longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Key Governor Races
Several states also elected new governors:
- Texas: Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott. She becomes the first Latina governor of Texas and the first Democratic governor since Ann Richards left office in 1995.
- Georgia: Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson. She becomes the first Black woman elected governor in US history.
- Ohio: Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. She becomes Ohio’s first female governor.
- Iowa: Democrat Rob Sand defeated Republican Zach Lahn, becoming the state’s first Democratic governor in 16 years.
- Minnesota: Amy Klobuchar won the governor’s race, becoming the state’s first woman governor.
- Wisconsin: Democrat David Crowley won the governor’s race.
- Florida: Republican Byron Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly, keeping the governor’s seat with the GOP.
This is the first time Democrats have controlled both chambers of Congress since before Trump’s current term. Analysts describe the results as a rebuke of the president, driven largely by voter concerns over high prices and the war in Iran.
Early voting ahead of election day topped 58 million, according to reporting from November 3.
