The process of the new design of the currency notes has been officially vetted and finalized by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). On January 4, 2026, Governor of SBP Jameel Ahmad told the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that the new designs are under the Federal Cabinet to be finalized. Printing will be started right after this executive nod.
Redesign Details and Security Features
The series to be launched is denominations of 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000. These new currency notes will feature international-standard security threads and holograms. Specifically, the SBP is experimenting with an experimental polymer (plastic) note of one denomination to experiment the life of the note under local conditions. The aesthetic themes point out:
- Regional and geographical diversity.
- National landmarks and climate change awareness.
- Significant contributions of women to national progress.
The notes will be issued gradually by the central bank. First, the SBP will launch two or three denominations when there is a good amount of minimum stock prepared. Most importantly, the SBP made it clear that no bank notes are out of the legal tender. No demonetization is planned soon and the Rs 5,000 note will persist in circulation so as not to cause disturbance of the market.
This restructure aims at introducing undocumented cash into the formal banking system and counterfeiting networks. According to experts, the move will boost the trust of the people, and the financial system in Pakistan will be modernized to meet the international standards. Although it is in an advanced stage, printing, the official date is subject to the decision by the Cabinet.
