In a surprising move on Wednesday, the government announced to decrease the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel by Rs5 per litre from December 16 (tomorrow).
The new price of petrol will be Rs140.82 per litre, read a notification by the finance division.
On the other hand, the new price of high-speed diesel, which is mostly used by the transport and agriculture sectors have been set at Rs137.62 per litre.
“The rates have been reduced in view of the declining price trend of petroleum products in global market and to transform the impact to the masses,” the statement added.
Kerosene will be sold at Rs109.53 per litre whereas the new price of light diesel oil is fixed at Rs107.06 per litre.
The new prices will be effective from December 16.
Earlier, on November 5, the price of petrol was increased by Rs8.03 per litre. The general public was furious with the governments decision.
