School summer vacations have officially been announced across parts of Pakistan, as education authorities revise the academic schedule due to intense heatwave conditions and upcoming public holidays.
The Education Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) released the notification of summer vacation for schools and colleges in plains areas on May 22, 2026, and will be followed by till August 31, 2026.
Early Summer Holidays Announced Due to Heatwave and Eid-ul-Adha
The decision to extend the summer vacation schedule was made for several reasons, authorities said, such as the extreme heat, weekly vacations, and Eid-ul-Adha holidays at the end of May 2026.
The officials said that according to the earlier schedule, schools were closing from June 1. However, the weekly holidays on 22nd, 23rd, 24th of May and Eid-ul-Adha holidays from 27th to 31st May would have essentially left schools open just for two days. The government decided to begin vacations earlier to prevent disruption.

A shorter summer break will be observed in colder KP. The notification states that the educational institutions in these areas will continue to be closed from 1st July to 31st July 2026.
Punjab Schools Also Closed for 3 Months
Meanwhile, Punjab government has also extended the summer vacation period with severe heat wave conditions. Schools will be closed from May 22 to August 23, 2026, and academic activities will resume Aug. 24, 2026, throughout the province.
The education minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said the decision was made because of the increase in temperatures and health worries among children. Earlier, schools had been asked to change their routines to accommodate extreme weather.
Key Takeaway
The decision on school summer holidays for Pakistan in 2026 highlights a rising awareness of the dangers associated with extreme heat and the complexities of academic planning. To guarantee the safety of students and the continuity of education, several provinces have coordinated their holiday periods.
