The moon will appear almost directly above the Holy Kaaba in Makkah on Monday morning, October 5, in the second such alignment of 2026. The phenomenon will be visible to the naked eye, although sunlight may make the moon less prominent.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the moon will reach its highest point at 7:50 a.m. local time. This will be 9:50 a.m. in Pakistan.
The moon will reach an altitude of about 89.87 degrees, placing it very close to the zenith above the Kaaba. The phenomenon occurs as the moon’s declination approaches Makkah’s latitude while it crosses the local meridian.
The moon will be in its waning crescent phase, with about 31.8% of its disk illuminated.
Moon Can Help Indicate Qibla Direction
Jeddah Astronomy Society President Engineer Majed Abu Zahra said the moon will appear less prominent because the event takes place during daylight.
The moon’s position can still serve as a visual guide for people in areas where it remains above the horizon. Its direction can help indicate the direction of Makkah and the Qibla. More precise methods should be used for accurate Qibla calculations.
The first moon alignment above the Kaaba in 2026 occurred on 28 February.
