As Karachi grapples with soaring temperatures, Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah has warned Karachi-Electric (KE) sternly. The minister stated that legal action would be taken against the power company if any fatalities occur due to heatstroke due to load-shedding during the current heatwave.
Today, Karachi’s temperature hovered around 40℃, while Larkana experienced a scorching 48.5℃. Officials stated that the heatwave not yet hit Karachi, but temperatures expected to rise.
The minister voiced his concerns during a session of the provincial assembly. When questioned about staffing in the Sindh government’s energy department, he assured that all appointments made based on necessity.
Ali Khurshidi, an MQM-P lawmaker, doubted the minister’s response. He said merit-based appointments wouldn’t face court challenges.
MQM-P MPA Mazahir Ameer questioned the Sindh government’s accountability for KE’s loadshedding. Minister Shah admitted ongoing power outages.
Minister Shah also mentioned that Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani has scheduled a meeting for Friday to discuss the collective issues faced by the public due to KE. He extended an invitation to other lawmakers to represent their parties at the meeting.
The minister emphasized the need to eliminate overbilling and unannounced loadshedding. In light of the predicted heatwave, he announced that all departments have put on high alert and necessary measures have implemented.
He declared that an FIR would be filed against KE if any loss of life occurs due to loadshedding during the heatwave.
To safeguard the public from the harsh effects of the intense heat, the province has postponed exams in educational institutions, altered school timings, and issued advisories urging the public to avoid direct sunlight during the heatwave period.
