Pakistan Officially Allows Donkey Exports to China

PAKISTAN: Pakistan has opened the door to a rather unexpected livestock export opportunity by allowing the export of donkeys to China, potentially creating a new avenue for trade and income generation between the two countries.

Pakistan could earn millions of dollars from the exports, which would be carried out under a controlled arrangement. The ministry has proposed establishing farmhouses for raising donkeys, slaughtering them at dedicated facilities in Gwadar and exporting the meat and hides from there to China.

The approval comes amid increased demand for donkey meat and hides, with efforts also reported to smuggle hides from Pakistan. In the past, attempts to smuggle hides from African countries to China were foiled.

The move could also add another dimension to the longstanding economic relationship between Pakistan and China. As the trade develops, authorities will need to ensure proper veterinary inspections, disease-control measures, humane treatment, and regulated transportation.

Maintaining strong animal-welfare and export standards will be essential for ensuring that the emerging trade remains sustainable and beneficial to local communities.
