In response to a growing backlog in passport clearance and to bolster security features, Pakistan has announced a significant increase in passport issuance fees. The decision, spearheaded by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P), comes amidst challenges caused by a shortage of lamination paper, leading to prolonged waiting times for passport applicants.
The backlog issue has been a pressing concern, with waiting periods stretching to several months, causing inconvenience and frustration among citizens. To mitigate this, the DGI&P has introduced a new fee structure aimed at streamlining services and improving security measures.
New Passport Fee in Pakistan
Under the revised fee schedule:
- A 36-page passport valid for five years will now cost Rs 12,500.
- The fee for a 10-year passport has increased to Rs 16,200.
- Individuals opting for a 72-page travel document with a five-year validity period will pay Rs 18,500, while the 10-year variant is priced at Rs 25,200.
- A 100-page passport with a 10-year validity period will now cost Rs 32,000.
These fee adjustments part of broader reforms initiated by the DGI&P to enhance passport services and fortify security protocols. However, concerns linger regarding the immediate impact on the backlog and waiting times for passport issuance.
The implementation of urgent and fast-track fees for passport processing has been a temporary measure to manage the backlog. The fee hike aims to generate revenue necessary for addressing operational challenges and enhancing overall service efficiency.
The DGI&P remains committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring a seamless and secure passport issuance process for all citizens.
