The Punjab government has moved a step closer to launching its much-anticipated electric tram project in Lahore, as the proposed route has been officially confirmed.
The tram will run from CBD Lahore through Jail Road and Mall Road, and will arrive at Istanbul Chowk in Lahore, Bilal Akbar said.
The minister said that the contract process is complete, and the project is now in the procurement phase. He added that the electric tram expected to start operating on Lahore’s roads in the upcoming financial year.

Shift in Transport Planning Strategy
In a media release, the Minister stated that the earlier plans envisioned a full metro-based system for the tram. But those plans have now put on hold for a more practical and flexible transport model.
He also assured that the project has designed in an environmentally responsible way, and no trees will cut during construction or implementation.
Lahore Transport Development
The Lahore electric tram falls under the umbrella of Punjab’s initiative to modernize the city transport network, ease traffic jams, and enhance the overall mobility of the population within the major cities of the province.
The project expected to become a cleaner and more efficient option for commuters in Lahore city, who have to travel in the centre of Lahore corridors on a daily basis, once it completed.
