Pakistan has raised petrol by 88 paisa to Rs. 382.02 per litre and high-speed diesel by 53 paisa to Rs. 389.80. The October 21 increase follows cuts a day earlier and adds Rs. 44 to the cost of 50 liters of petrol.
Pakistan now reviews fuel prices daily after replacing the earlier weekly schedule. The federal government announced the latest increase on Tuesday, October 20, and the new rates took effect at midnight on Wednesday, October 21.
A Smaller Rise After Larger Cuts
The government had lowered petrol by Rs. 5.16 and diesel by Rs. 7.69 per liter from October 20. The next review raised petrol from Rs. 381.14 to Rs. 382.02 and diesel from Rs. 389.27 to Rs. 389.80.
Even after the increase, petrol costs Rs. 4.28 less per litre than before Tuesday’s cut. Diesel still costs Rs. 7.16 less.
At the announced rates, 50 liters of petrol cost Rs. 19,101, an increase of Rs. 44. The same quantity of diesel costs Rs. 19,490, up Rs. 26.50.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), Pakistan’s oil and gas regulator, excludes the cost of transporting fuel from company depots to individual stations from these figures. Pump prices also reflect this delivery charge.
Daily Reviews Follow Global Oil Prices
OGRA bases daily rates on average international prices and the rupee’s value against the US dollar over seven working days. Friday’s rates stay in place through Saturday and Sunday.
Pakistan previously reviewed prices every two weeks, then switched to weekly reviews as conflict in the Middle East disrupted energy supplies. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the daily system aims to pass changes in global oil costs to consumers sooner.
The approved rules allow OGRA to announce daily prices without fresh approval from the prime minister or federal government. The Finance Division still approves changes to the petroleum levy, a government charge on fuel.
