US House Speaker Mike Johnson has rejected calls for a moratorium on artificial intelligence development, warning that slowing the US AI sector could give China a competitive advantage.

Johnson said AI companies should take responsibility for regulating their own development. He argued that the government should not require companies to slow their work.

At the same time, Johnson said some safeguards could be introduced. He backed ideas including independent auditors and greater transparency from AI companies.

Johnson’s comments come as concerns over the rapid development of AI are growing in Washington.

Senator Bernie Sanders and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon also called for stronger restrictions on AI at a Washington event on Tuesday. The two have different political views, but both raised concerns about the risks of rapidly advancing AI.

Sanders called for a pause on advanced AI development until stronger safety rules are established. Bannon also called for tighter controls, while emphasizing restrictions on China’s access to US AI technology.
