Pakistan has taken another step toward advancing its digital infrastructure as Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman announced that 5G has been launched on 440 telecom towers across the country. The announcement was made during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications.
The PTA chairman told that internet speed in Pakistan has now come from a below average to a medium level. He said that some time ago internet speed used to plummet outside of Islamabad and even his own locality used to have a speed of 1 Mbps.
The rollout of the 5G service to 440 towers in Pakistan is a significant step in enhancing mobile connectivity and bolstering the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure, the PTA chairman said. The project will help to improve internet speeds and overall digital experience for users.
He also pointed out how the lack of electricity in the country is affecting telecom services. The chairman of PTA told that Pakistan experienced an average of 10 hours of load shedding during May with some areas facing up to 18 hours of load shedding which impacted the operations of telecom infrastructure.
To overcome the problem, the Prime Minister has formed a committee to look into the possibility of exempting telecom towers from load shedding, he added. The move is aimed to keep uninterrupted mobile and internet services in Pakistan.
The move comes amid Pakistan’s push towards modernizing its telecom industry and readiness for the rollout of 5G networks, despite the fact that the commercial rollout of 5G networks is not yet complete across the country.
