Hajj 2020 may be cancelled due to Coronavirus

In the kingdom’s 90-year history, Saudi officials are considering cancel the Hajj 2020 for the first time, a senior official of Hajj and Umrah ministry quoted.

Saudi officials considered canceling the annual Hajj season for the first time since the kingdom was established in 1932, after the number of coronavirus infections exceeded 100,000.

The Hajj 2020, scheduled for later this year, is the world’s largest religious gathering, hosting more than two million Muslims in Saudi Arabia’s holy cities.

Officials considering the idea to hold a limited people for Hajj this year. The earlier Saudi government was considering allowing 20 percent of Pakistani pilgrims to perform Hajj, the minister of religious affairs had said. A final decision is yet to be made.

The cancellation of the Hajj would not only be a major blow to the Muslim world but would also impact Saudi Arabia’s tourism revenue. Last year, the state earned $ 12 billion from Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

To prevent COVID-19 transmission locally state signaled the postponement of the pilgrimage for non-native pilgrims.
