Reports circulating in international media have claimed that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has submitted his resignation to the office of Iran’s Supreme Leader amid growing tensions over the influence of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in government affairs.
In a letter, President Pezeshkian reportedly voiced concerns that major decisions are increasingly being taken without him or other senior government officials. According to the report, he said hardline commanders in the IRGC have taken control of real power in the organization, reducing the authority of the elected government.
According to the letter of resignation, “In the current situation, Pezeshkian cannot govern the nation properly and meet his constitutional duties, so he asks to be dismissed from the position.
Tensions between President Pezeshkian and IRGC leadership have grown more severe in recent months, especially concerning military strategy, economic issues and the effects of current regional tensions on the ordinary citizens of Iran, analysts suggest.
The reports coincide with Iran’s economy under immense pressure, as high inflation, economic uncertainty, and worries about living standards remain major themes in the national conversation.
However, Iranian authorities have strongly rejected the resignation claims. The Iranian Presidential Office has rejected the reports as untrue and politically motivated, saying President Pezeshkian is doing his job as usual.
The president is still very active in government affairs, officials said, adding that any report of his resignation is a part of “misinformation” campaigns designed to create “political instability.”
Meanwhile, no official announcement has been made by Iranian officials about any resignation request made by President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The developments have garnered attention from around the world, casting doubt on Iran’s political dynamics and the relationship between the elected government and powerful security forces including the IRGC.
